I read this for the NYRB Classics club, and strangely enough had the most favorable review of it out of three members who discussed it. A tragic, bawdy novel that takes place both in London and rural Sudan - it explores the vast difference between the West & Near East; how people are the same everywhere you go - and express their love, pain, despair and disdain in shockingly similar ways.
