When I told my thirteen-year-old I was reading The Giver, he said "That's a really good book. You'll like it." He was correct. A truly original story that reinforces how wonderful it is to be different.

Jonas lives in a "perfect" society, where everyone follows the rules and deviation isn't tolerated. When he is given his adult assignment as The Receiver at the age of twelve, he is apprehensive until he meets The Giver and learns what life used to be like through memories he receives from the older man.

A thought provoking story, which instead of telling the reader how to feel, allows them to answer the many questions raised for themselves. I'll be passing this on to my daughter. Highly recommended.
