It's the summer before her junior year in high school, and Natalie is embracing the heat. She is happy but sad about this summer. Happy because of obvious reasons, it's summer. But sad because her brilliant older sister Claire is leaving for university in the fall. One night, while returning from a late night party with her friends, Natalie hears sirens, although she doesn't think these sirens could connect with her. Until she comes from to her hysterical parents. They tell her that her beautiful older sister has been in an accident. Claire falls unconscious, and Natalie's family is heartbroken and scared. Natalie is confused and uncomfortable having to massage her sisters cold feet in the hospital room. She feels empty and alone when talking to her unresponsive dead-but-still-alive sister. After a brain scan reveals the truth, Natalie and her family are grief-stricken and heartbroken.
The ending of this book is not happy. I will tell you that. Also, after this book is over, you may find yourself weeping quietly to yourself, because this descriptive writing is powerful and stunning.
