Ok, I liked this book more than i expected to. In fact, I would compare it to really good Young Adult fiction in the vein of Francesca Lia Block. That's not meant to be insulting, I love Young Adult fiction. It's not that it was light. It's that it mirrored the conventions of a fairy tale with some Greek myth thrown in -- there were (musical) Magicians, and mysterious evil (adult) presences, magic (alchoholic) potions, a chorus of interns, and spells cast. Of course none of them are called those things, but they're there. Lethem nicely undermines all this with a heroine who is sometimes charming but mostly, when the veil of magic is lifted, drunk and sloppy. I guess I would call it a slightly depressing allegory for the fun and angsty romp that is being in your 20s.
