I didn't like this novel at first. It seemed a bit pretentious and not my thing, because it's about a powerful Hollywood couple and it tends to name-drop too many producers and film stars. Also the lead character has a mansion with servants, so that put me off a bit too. But then it grew on me. The wife of the couple, Anne Rosenbaum, is the narrator and she inadvertantly begins a book club for the Hollywood elite. She teaches them about literature and although those parts sometimes feel like a lecture, I liked all the literary references. The rest of the story is about her relationships with her husband and son, and I won't say anything about these because it would ruin some of the drama. While I had a few reservations about this story (mostly of the 'oh poor rich white people problems' variety), overall I enjoyed the ride. The characters are well developed and I liked the style the author used, where the narrator would flash back in time to tell us snippets of past events, gradually revealing why the current events are taking place and the deeper meaning and pain behind them. Three stars from me.
