really liked it
bookshelves: american-british-historical, 4-stars

I read this after reading two less-well-written books by Putney, so this one was refreshing! The level of research and detail I've come to expect from one of her books was in full force here. She manages to bring a culture completely foreign to the modern individual to life in vivid color. I love the way she mentions terms and customs generally unknown to modern people and explains them succinctly and without fanfare. This book embodies what I love about Putney's writing: well-researched backgrounds, compelling characters and exciting circumstances!
