So far I'm not impressed with the writing. It's nice and easy to read, which I appreciate, but it's also nothing special.

Jury is still out.

I liked the book, but it was nothing to write home about. Perhaps the hype about the book gave me unrealistic expectations. I enjoyed the read, and the story was definitely powerful. But I had just read Ian McEwan's _Atonement_, for which guilt and redemption were also big themes, and I just couldn't help comparing the writing by the two authors, with McEwan coming out on top.

On the one hand, I appreciated how easy the book was to read, how clear and simple the language was. On the other hand, I wanted to see some innovative descriptions, or interesting turns of phrase, and the book disappointed in this respect.

Still, a good read, and a worthwhile glimpse into a different culture.
