Mister Magnolia is an exciting and adventurous rhyming book that centres on a man that only has one boot. Many exciting things occur in his life and it describes all of the friends he has, how he plays the trumpet, he rides a scooter and how happy he is in general. However, the story returns to how he only has one thing that is missing in his life and that is that one boot! But then, on his travels, he comes across a girl that gives him a present and to his surprise it is a boot! The story has a very happy ending where Mister Magnolia gets what he has been searching for. This book is a very appealing rhyming book that focuses on illustrations that reflects the words utilised in the rhyme. Furthermore, it uses a choice of words in the book that has a strong impact on the children in terms of word repetition and the sympathy that they have for Mister Magnolia and the importance of friendship.
This book is ideal for children aged 3-7 years. This book can be used as a read aloud book to the children for reading time, where children are to repeat particular sentences in the rhyme. Children could also use the text for inspiration when working on adjectives, rhyming words etc. There are also many different cross curricular links, in maths the children could count up all the animals and then put them into a venn/carol diagram. In science, children could think about the pond habitat and what animals might live in there. For an art lesson children could even design mister magnolia a new boot!
