I found this book difficult to read because the style kept me emotionally distant from the events taking place. This seems to have been the point. Martin Dressler is a retro-modern book, full of narration and description with hardly any action or dialogue, with undercurrents of fabulism. I felt the book was at its best in the last 50 pages as the Borgesian concepts of worlds within worlds and restless dreamers were paid off in ways that I thought were delightful.
