really liked it
bookshelves: 2010-reads

I have never really liked the writing of John Irving. In fact, I forced myself to go to a reading of his a few years ago- just because everyone I knew raved about his writing. I came away from that event, not liking him any better - but at least understood why I had such a hard time with his books. The theme of sexual abuse (or fantasy) was always a bit too much for me.

Until, I read this book. Sexual abuse is the main theme of The Hotel New Hampshire. While it is all mixed up in a surreal tale of circus performers, philosophers, bears, and terrorists; to me it is the most "real" work of fiction that he has created.

A book that was very difficult for me to read....but most rewarding.
