Angela's Reviews > Sweetland
I love Michael Crummey fiction SO much. He's not "selling" Newfoundland to us, his readers, in the descriptions icy wind and damp weather, the desperate remoteness, the cultural "backwardness", the tough living conditions, the lack of jobs, the flagging fish industry, the creepiness of the ocean and landscape is he? And yet…I feel utterly disappointed when I look up from the last page of one of his novels to discover that I'm not actually IN Newfoundland. I feel a sense of grief that I'm not at least from there.
