Quick summary
Single mother and linguist Vivi Vincent walks into the Minnesota Mall with her 8-year old son, Michael, and within minutes finds herself in the middle of one of the worst terrorist attacks since 9/11. FBI Special Agent Jed Brennan, on leave and on his way to his Wisconsin hometown, stops by the mall for some Christmas shopping and finds himself unwittingly in the middle of the action. He joins forces with the resourceful Vivi to escape but not before her son manages to overhear vital information about the terrorist that ultimately puts him at risk.

What I loved about the story
The action starts pretty quickly and the tension never eases up throughout the book. Vivi's not only super protective about her emotionally challenged son but is quick-minded and resourceful. As terrified as she is for Michael, she's no damsel in distress, holding her own among all the alphabet law enforcement. Jed's smart and naturally bonds with the traumatized and mute Michael. I loved his relationship with the child as much as with Vivi. Their romance works, too, even when Jed screws up royally.

The inclusion of the terrorists' points of view made the story chilling, offering a perspective that was maddening and illuminating at the same time.

The bottom line
The story is high tension with a complicated and intricate plot that wasn't easy to unravel let alone solve. Between worrying about Vivi and Michael, figuring out the terrorists' end game and who was the inside leak, I was completely enthralled. Though the nod goes to the suspense, the romance holds its own. Loving this series!
