really liked it
bookshelves: classics

I'm totally going to do spoilers here. Just so you know.

Despite the happy ending, with our heroine getting exactly what she wants, this book depressed the hell out of me.

I adore Jane Austen. I do. Persuasion is now the only one I have left to read. I love the social satire. I love the cleverness and wit.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around what exactly was satarized here.

We have Fanny. She's set up as the ultimate female. Fanny=feminine. She's modest and kind, physically weak and morally strong. Perhaps it's because I'm such a feminist, but, giving such a character a happy ending seems like crap to me. Ugh!

And maybe it's because I'm such a sucker. I would have been totally in love with Henry. I wanted to kill him at the end. Kill him!

Edmund and Mary ended up how I figured they would. I spent about half the book wondering why men were such dopes. That's why I was so happy with Henry's first change. Finally! I thought, a man whose head is turned by a nice, quiet girl! I would have been quite happy had that been the moral of the story. alas. Nice guys complain they never win? Pushaw. Nice girls have it so much worse...

Not that I'm bitter or anything. ;)

Leena *raises eyebrow*

Considering that all 900 of your friends happen to be attractive young women, I don't think you're as nice as you think you are. LOL

Yeah, I do always say what I feel.
