I think I can honestly say this is the first book I read based completely on goodreads recommendations. So thanks to all of you who praised John Burdett's book. I gather this is the opener in what may become a series featuring Thai detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep. I certainly hope so.

No spoiler alert needed. I'm not giving anythng away. But I can tell you that this is as enjoyable for the characters Burdett creates and his portrait of the humid, jam-packed, sex-drenched, chili-flavored city of Bangkok as it is for the whodunit itself.

In this one quick-paced novel, you will find corrupt cops, Buddhist ahderents, snakes, crocodiles, prostitutes, Cambodian thugs, Chinese loan sharks, the FBI, Ukrainian expatriates, the jade trade, methamphetamines and specialized surgery.

If that's not an enticement, I don't know what would be. Immerse yourself in a new culture and a new personality. What a great ride.
