Mike's Reviews > Ball Four
I've been jonesing to read this for a long time and figured spring training would be as good a time as any. Bouton is full of great observations, especially about the hated Yankees, but this project ultimately falls short as a book. Diaries are fun, but there's no story arc, he tells some of the same jokes over and over again. And while I can imagine this book was eye-opening at the time, baseball fans should now be well aware that players are a bunch of petty, suspicious freakshows who use illegal performance-enhancing substances. The book feels dated. The first 200 pages or so blow by but the last 200 are kind of a slog.
