Tachna's take on vampires and wizards makes for an interesting and pleasurable experience.

Although there are times when the prose degenerates into excessive expressions of emotion, overall Tachna's technique is well executed. Her characters are developed, faceted, flawed.

This first book in the series focuses on the development of Alain and Orlando's relationship, and while the rest of the cast is relatively secondary, they are still colorful and intriguing.

I wanted to give the book four stars, but felt that the quality of the prose throughout did not warrant such. There were times when the dialog felt juvenile, unnatural; too, there were moments when the characters' introspections came across as over-worked, melodramatic, or excessive. I wanted her writing to be stronger, tighter than it was.
