really liked it
bookshelves: ya, mental-health

An interesting look at the home life of Patrick Henry's family. The book follows two of his daughters as they try to live with the realities of life around them: their father being hugely involved in the birth of America and their mother being locked away in the cellar because she is suffering from a mental illness. I felt Rinaldi combined various historical aspects well, the plight of woman at that time, the life of slaves, and the sacrifices made for America. The only thing I felt detracted a little from the story was that neither Anne nor Patsy sounded like girls their age. Anne sounded much more like a girl of 16 or so, even though she was only 10. Patsy sounded even older.
