Elantris is a city once inhabited by Gods. If not Gods then people who seemed like gods. It has been dead for ten years. Now the regime that has replaced it and its rulers is on the verge of political and economic collapse.

I liked Elantris more than I thought I might. I really wanted to know what was going to happen at the end. I cared about the characters who were more or less three dimensional. For me the most developed character was Hrathen. He changed the most and was the most believable.

The most distracting thing about this book was the names. True it is a fantasy and so nothing really needs to be familiar, yet in some ways it was like trying to read a book in a foreign language. It was hard to identify with characters with unpronounceable names. And, whats with all the adverbs at the end of sentences, I thought distractedly as I read crazily.

For those reasons I can't give it four stars.
