This is not a thriller. It's a Jewish family story told first-person by the youngest boy. It might as well be a Neil Simon play or a Barry Levinson movie. You've seen it, including the prejudice and the persecution. The political intrigue is laid in as subplot and seems almost incidental throughout much of the book, even though the impacts on the family are huge.

It's a cautionary tale, of course. Perhaps Roth is saying, if America had gone fascist, things would have been different.

But not all that different.

That's the scary thought.
