I have trouble getting past the fact that a book told primarily in black women's voices was written by a white woman. Isn't that the definition of privilege and an example of racism? Should privileged authors never write from the perspective of oppressed folks? Is it good that fiction featuring black women's stories is getting so much attention, regardless of who wrote it? I'm not sure...

I do, of course, note the irony in the fact that a white woman is writing about how a black woman would react to being asked by a white woman to tell her story so that she (the white woman) could write it up and presumably be compensated for it. Yeah.

Having finished the book, the best I can say of it is that it was a fairly inoffensive story. Honestly, I found my reaction to the author's decision to write the book much more interesting than the book itself.
