The lives of nine people become increasingly connected as they wait to be rescued after an earthquake traps them in the office of the Indian consulate where each of them is waiting to get a visa to travel to India. To help pass the time in their desperate situation, the nine take turns telling revealing stories about themselves. Divakaruni is a master story-teller and uses this narrative technique beautifully. The reader shares the characters' anxiety and fears as well as the distraction from those fears that their individual stories provide. The ending was a bit abrupt, but otherwise I think this may be her best book yet.
