My first introduction to Conan Doyle, and a thoroughly enjoyable one. Although I predicted the outcome sometime before the end, the journey was a most pleasant one.

Warm, rounded characters coupled with a pacy plot hooked me in from the start. It's prose to savour and enjoy, with different narrative techniques employed to convey the sense of Holmes looking back on an "adventure".

The difference in eras shines through, and provides a telling glimpse into a strata of society back then.

My copy was coupled with "The Tale of the Speckled Band", a novella dealing with a dastardly act, which was also a good read.
