Peter Robinson is an able writer of detective fiction, and I've very much enjoyed some of his later books, e.g. Watching the Dark. His novels are set around County Durham and North Yorkshire, an area I know well, so that adds interest.

Past Reason Hated was first published in 1992 and while it's a good crime story, it feels dated. This is partly the way that Inspector Banks and his colleagues seem to interview all their suspects over alcohol and numerous cigarettes! I also find it difficult to warm to Banks himself, though his colleague Annie in the later books is very well drawn and I'm looking forward to catching up with her in Children of the Revolution when my library gets it in!
