really liked it

Kurlansky wrote 'Salt' and 'Cod' - two worth looking into if you haven't already. Here he dives into the WPA Writer's archives, the planned but never completed 'America Eats'. There are bits, essays, ethnographic fieldnotes, poems, but among others Zora Neale Hurston and Eudora Welty.
