this was one of the best novels i've ever read. it is much better than grapes of wrath, and grapes is on of my favorites as well. it's very similar to 100 years of solitude (minus the magical realism) in that it's focused on a relatively secluded area (salinas) over several generations (3) and features a prose that is as inventive and styled as garcia marquez's. that the novel is huge in its scope and breadth is appropriate as it tackles themes such as evil, free will, redemption, hope -- all with a distinctly american imprint. i would recommend this novel to anyone that wants to sink their teeth into something thought-provoking, soul-jarring, but accessible.
