Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring

Easily one of my favorite books I've ever read. It's engrossing, exceptionally well researched, - as well as written - and plunges you so deep into the world of those who worked in the Culper Ring that it feels very personal. Mind you, this is all coming from one who had little to no interest in the Revolutionary War before I came upon the book hiding on the lower shelf at the airport [every other book whose summary I read was a promise of disappointing dreck]. Though I will admit I am a total history nerd. I honestly can't say enough good things about this book. I was swept away by the intimacy and so affected by the accounts of the personal lives coupled with the scenes set by Rose of the entirety of the war that reading his book is something that will always stand out in my mind. I can understand some reviews invoking the word 'dry,' I would call it vividly descriptive. I have passionately recommended this book to just about everyone I know and I think I've startled them all with my zeal on the subject. Read it, do yourself the favor.

Did you end up watching the series Turn on AMC? If so what did you think?

I really wanted to but saw the previews and they led me to believe that they took this history that Rose presents and did what Hollywood does - made it steamier and more drama filled. To that I say (if it is the case) it doesn't need it. There were so many passages in this book I had to reread to believe that it needs no Hollywood magic to make it interesting. Pretty much I hesitate to watch the series (although the lead is one of my all time favorite actors) because the book was so incredibly good that it would annoy be to see them take this history, chop it up, take what suits them and embellish the rest because as I said - it doesn't need it. Truth is more interesting than Hollywood.
Have you seen the series and read the book?

I have watched Turn, the first two seasons, and although it was a slow start for me it ended up being totally engrossing. I'm actually happy that it kept to the bare facts while embellishing in other areas. Makes for good entertainment, but really it is a good series. A nice compliment to the book. Bravo to Rose for all his success.
Haha I just saw this cause I just finished the book! Lol for some reasons I don't get notifications for these replies so I have to check. And great thing about owning books like this (which is rare for me) is I can take as lo as I want and enjoy it. I highlight and mark it up once in awhile just to keep me going and paying attention. Also that way I can find things unlike later too. But only for these kinds of books. And oh good! I only started the show cause of Jamie Bell haha and then I fell in love with Seth Numrich (Tall Boy) and then JJ Feild (Andre) haha I even ended up buying the first two seasons on DVD I actually love it that much. Despite the drama but I REALLY loved third season. Did you watch that one this year?
