really liked it
bookshelves: historical-fiction

Uncle Jed dreams of owning his own barbershop but obstacle after obstacle keep holding him back. First he pays for his niece to have a surgery (from whose perspective the story is told) and then he loses all his money when the banks crash at the start of the Great Depression. Despite these setbacks he continues to travel from house to house trading his services for food, clothing, and when his clients can pay, money. Eventually Uncle Jed saves enough and at the age of 79 is able to open his shop.
A beautiful story of hard work and determination, this is a great read-aloud for primary age students who will enjoy the story and the beautiful pictures by James E. Ransome.
