This book started off so well that I settled in happily, content to be in the hands of a master writer. The story moved slowly, but it moved, and the characters were so well constructed that it was a pleasure to spend time with them. But then the climax arrived--and fell flat. Characters griped at each other for no foreshadowed reason, or behaved out of character. A scene that should have been the emotionally charged confrontation between the widow of a Nazi art thief and the widow of his victim ended up slightly confusing, both because of the out-of-character antagonism and the fuzzy logic.
