it was ok
bookshelves: naturey, fiction

this is so pretentious it hurts. the teenaged dialogue in here was so glaringly out of touch that it completely distracted from the plot... but there's giant squids, and that earns a star all on its own.

Lisa I spend some time around kids this age (it's my job), and I found the combination of dorky-embarrassed-prim and self-consciously-vulgar to be about right for a kid just hitting adolescence and dealing with respected adults, not-so-respected adults, and peers he's not quite sure how to impress, while trying to stay true to his own interests. I thought the giant squids kind of detract from the story, but the dialogue struck me as just un-hip and out-of-touch enough to sound like real kids, not sitcoms. It sure ain't the OC.
