it was ok
bookshelves: adult

This was not for me. It was a generous 2 stars because I can't give one of my otherwise favorite authors just one. I really did not enjoy reading this. I typically like Chabon's complex prose, but in this case, it was so difficult to follow that I felt like I was reading in a second language, like when I had to read in French in high school. It really felt like a chore to read. I had trouble just following the story. There were moments when I glimpsed Chabon's signature humor and that sustained me to at least finish it. My favorite part was the Afterword, when he was saying more interesting things, back in his own voice. I don't think that speaks well for the book, though. Better luck to others - maybe you will like it more. I will definitely still move on to his next one, but I need a little break after this.

Kate I agree -- it lacks the typical Chabon uniqueness and charm. And the random illustrations make me feel like I'm reading a book for my 3rd grade homework.

Heather Ha. Thank you for the validation.
