really liked it
bookshelves: magic, fairytales

This is a sweet ragbag of a story. Jones tosses in a lot of elements, and even at the end of the story it's a bit hard to sort them out entirely - and it doesn't really matter. The main characters are unique and real, and it's just fun to spend time with them. It's really an old-fashioned fairy tale in a lot of ways.

Jones wrote two sorts of stories, from what I've read of hers - some that are sort of sketched in, that in another author's hands would have been a couple of hundred pages longer, if not a couple of books longer. They're interesting to read - Jones is ALWAYS interesting, you just don't know what's coming next - but not completely engagaging. And others that are solidly put together and utterly charming. This is one of the latter.

I re-read it, having just watched the movie the other night. Very different in some ways, but still really sweet.
