This book had the potential to be a great read, as it [attempted:] to incorporate my favorite fictional themes: family, women, girls, history, black people. Unfortunately, it fell flat.

Besides the fact that characters weren't fleshed out well and most of the storyline was overwrought and predictable, the "Negro dialect" of Tempe & Willa Mae was so unauthentic that it came off as a cheesy impersonation of "us" by yet another white person on the periphery of our culture. Honestly, that's EXACTLY what it was. As a reader and a black woman...a true child of the rich culture of southern African-American culture, I was insulted.

I would've liked to see the author concentrate more on character and plot development than stumble and mumble her way through antebellum slave vernacular.
