For a first novel this is a sensational read. It had me from the first chapter and I never lost interest.

This is the story of two friends, Frankie and Jack, who have been best buds from infancy. During their final year at high school a new girl arrives at their school, the whirlwind that is Kate. Frankie thought that she and Jack would end up together but he starts to date Kate whilst Frankie looks on from the sidelines.

An end of school trip to the beach ends with the disappearance of Kate. The book details the effect Kate’s disappearance has had on those left behind, namely Frankie and Jack. Frankie has spent years struggling with the fallout from this incident.

Just as Frankie is getting her life together, Jack returns when he and his defacto partner, Sara, buy the block of land behind Frankie’s house. How Kylie Kaden handles the relationship between these three is done with grace and it is difficult to elaborate without giving the story away.

This is not your typical swooning romance book but is based on reality with a bit of mystery surrounding Kate’s disappearance. It is beautifully written with some amusing Aussie slang thrown in. I’m definitely waiting for the next book from this new Australian author.

I was provided with an ARC of this book by Escape Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
