it was amazing
bookshelves: book-club, fiction, classics

For whatever reason, I expected a lot from this book. I expected a lot of feeling, a lot of meaning, some frustration, some truth. This book delivered on each of these levels, and went far beyond my expectation.

As a book that wrestles with the most ancient of struggles, between good and evil, you really are taken to both ends of the spectrum. It was hard to read about the evilest of evils. Maddening! I slammed the book shut more than once. Really wish I could have skipped those parts. Can humans really be so bad? They can, and this book slaps you in the face with that reminder... On the other hand, it felt so good to read about good people, with good thoughts and ideas. The word redemption came to mind so often while reading. And how often does a book do THAT? People, so many people, touched by evil but not defined by it. The theme of this book rang so true. "Thou mayest" do the same.

One of those love/hate books, an amazing read start to finish.
