really liked it

I wish I could put 3.5 stars.
Not what I was expecting at all from Almudena Grandes. Maybe it is her writing (this is the first book I've read by her) or maybe the translation, but the book didn't feel very Spanish. I've lived in Madrid (the more realistic setting of the book) and I've lived in Cadiz, and there was something just not quite right in the contemporary sections of the book. The historical flashbacks were quite good, but the feeling was a little off.

As for a story, it's incredible. However, I would have liked to have seen even more detail on some of the lesser characters in the novel, instead of focusing just on two. A definite recommendation, although not at the top of the list.
