really liked it
bookshelves: re-reading, fiction

Re-reading the book, I just now realize how prophetic was this novel, published in 1955, just before the all out American involvement in Vietnam. Graham Greene's MI6 background must have helped him in that regard.

The patronizing tone of the old-guards of the colonial empires toward the Americans and all things American gets old. Maybe because I sympathize toward the Americans and their 'innocence' more now than years back when I first read it. Maybe because I understand the Europeans and their moral failings better also.
