Zathura: A Space Adventure by Chris Van Allsburg is a picture book intended for readers in grade two through five. I gave it four stars. Danny Budwing and his older brother, Walter Budwing, are always teasing and fighting with each other. Walter wants nothing to do with his younger brother, until, one day, they begin playing Zathura, a board game that transports them through outer space. They must work together and sort out their differences, through meteor showers, black holes, robots, gravity changes, and pirates, in order to escape Zathura and get back home. The illustrations in the text are black and white, giving the reader a space-age sort and mysterious sort of feel, perfectly complementing Zathura. The theme of working together as a family, despite annoyances and differences, gives readers the idea of the closeness and importance of family. Readers will come to learn that you shouldn’t take family members for granted, especially when you don’t know what the next moment may hold.
