We finished this today. I didn't think they'd be able to handle waiting to find out what happened until tomorrow. They've really enjoyed the book and today was hilarious. My two older boys (both 9) started pacing the room as we got closer to the time they knew the Indians would attack. They each had a dagger. When I read the part about the Indians chasing Gertrude my boys started screaming and running and fighting off the imaginary Indians. It got rather loud and crazy.

They all listened attentively throughout the book. I think it's a nice book to fit in with the French and Indian wars. It gives you a feel for the thoughts and tension of the time. It's fairly easy for elementary and middle school to understand although some of the Dutch names were hard to figure out.

My two youngest have been yelling, at various times during the day, "Bergom op Zoom." I think this book is a keeper.
