The twin fiction text I chose to pair with this book is Heat by Mike Lupica. Both of these books are about boys who love baseball but have problems to face that keep them away from reaching the top. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in the Major Leagues. Because of his race, he is tortured, alienated, and threatened because people don't want him to play even though he has the talent and ability. Michael Arroyo is Cuban and the only family he has is his brother, Carlos. He dreams of playing at Yankee Stadium and to do this him and his team must make it to the Little League World Series. But when opposing coaches and players question Michael's age, he has no way of proving it because he has no parents or birth certificate. In the end, both Michael Arroyo and Jackie Robinson overcome opposition to play the sport they love.
