As a fan of Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Gray series, I wasn't quite sure how I would feel about a standalone not set in that world.

I shouldn't have been worried.

Full of the mysterious gothic spookiness we've come to love from her other books, with the same clean style of romance, I thoroughly enjoyed this one.

I loved how so much was left uncertain, relying on the reader's own imagination to come up with whatever conclusion they prefer.

I was also quite happy with the ending, though I admit I was quite surprised by it (and loved the heroine's own commentary on the ending of novels).

Of course, I wish it'd been steamy (I'm not a big fan of fade to black lovemaking), but I still greatly enjoyed this delightfully spooky gothic mystery.
