What a sad, haunting book. Coetzee is at once maddening and intriguing, as he's just achingly in need of a good shake to get him out of his head. Of additional interest, are the intricate brush strokes Coetzee uses to paint the very complicated experience of white South Africans/Afrikaaners in the 70s, and the relationship between the self and the State.
