This book was probably chosen for dealing with a child with special needs. Charlie is mentally handicapped which either prevents him from speaking or results in him being too disconnected from the rest of the world to speak. Sara, the middle child, believes that she understands him more than others do. It seemed a bit too short to cover everything mentioned: the absent dad, Charlie's unique situation, Sara's feelings about everything during the summer and her relationship with Joe. It was a cute, quick story, but I'm not sure it would have won the Newbery today.
