really liked it
bookshelves: unfinished

Beautifully written, and I'm enjoying it a great deal(despite resenting ANOTHER Caudill nomination with a body count). So far, my biggest problem with this book is the heavy allusions to Of Mice And Men that the author draws early on in the book. These are utterly meaningless unless the reader knows who George and Lenny are and what happened with Lenny and the rabbits and the puppy, etc. It seems unfair to expect this in a book about a 7th grader, which is otherwise written at a reading level appropriate for gr.4-8. Of Mice And Men is both written at a higher reading level and is at a much higher age/interest level; kids interested in reading The Mailbox can hardly be expected to have already picked up and polished off Steinbeck on their own.
