The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain (American Publishing Company 1876)(Fiction - Children's). Along with The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, these are the best known and best-loved books by (arguably) America's best-loved author. Tom Sawyer is a thinly disguised stand-in for the author as a boy. This book tells the tale of his youth on the banks of the Mississippi River. Everyone knows these stories: the whitewashed fence, lost in the cave, and hiding from Injun Joe. It's obvious why Twain held America in thrall at the turn of the 19th century. My rating: 8/10, finished 1970.
