** spoiler alert ** he's a dark mofo this ellroy. i think i like his staccato style and his swearing. he is a bit "american" for my liking, but that's a personal opinion.

this story is difficult in that it involves his mother who was murdered - it's a kind of turning-out of the soul. he ends up changing sympathies (from pathetic father to strong mother). pity he did not do it when she was alive.

ps - i read that ellroy does not read any other authors, he wants to keep his own original style. this sounds prick-ish, but on the other hand, he could be right?
