I have long been a fan of Barbara Hambly, so I was surprised I had missed an entire series she wrote. And, at least from the first book, it's worth reading. This is less fantasy-oriented than some of her other work; more of a straight-up mystery (which might be why I missed it?).

Her always meticulous historical research makes the culture clashes going on in 1830's New Orleans accessible, even if I had to (unsuccessfully, in many cases) look up many unfamiliar words. (There's a lot of French, which I don't speak.) I think I'm learning things just by reading it.
