A key point revolves around encrypted documents needing to be re-encrypted once they've been unlocked, else they'll now be permanently open again. Did any software really work like that (circa. 1996), or is this just a sloppy plot device? (Plus a “Silicone Valley” that's managed to survive to my 14th-printing copy.)

Maria It could work so, if encryption is not built in to whataver application is used to open original message, but 3rd-party encryption tool is used. Similar to archive.
I don't think there is an application with built-in encription that leaves opened files unlocked though if you did not switched aff protection explicitly.
