The TV series from a few decades back doesn't really try to tell Boyington's story. At best, it's a fictionalization of the middle part of the book, and even at that doesn't attempt to tell us anything about him.

His book can be divided roughly into three parts - his time with the Flying Tigers, his flying with the Marines, and his captivity with the Japanese, with a bit of a denouement covering his struggle with alcoholism.
