This book is a serviceable story of a teen's maturation in a railroad-construction camp in the Sierra Nevada range in 1867. The conflicts seemed realistic. What I think that the book lacked was more description of the environment and trappings of everyday life once in the camp. The friendship between Sean and Otter was believable, and the reactions of the central character, Otter, seemed typically adolescent (read into that what you will). Interesting from a historical perspective.
