Well, I still believe that Thomas Merton was a great man. And I still believe that he had a lot to say about religion and spirituality. But this book did not bring me any closer to really understanding him.

This is his memoir of his life up until is conversion and through the beginnings of his life as a Trappist Monk. I have to keep reminding myself that he became a monk in the 1940's because I am very disappointed in his lack of love for Protestants. Merton says often that certain things can only happen if you are Catholic or in a Catholic country. This doesn't sit well for me.

I am not sorry I read this book, but I will be cautious about what book by Merton I read next.
